Ukrainian delegation takes part in the plenary session of the UN Forum on Indigenous Issues
On May 12th, the Ukrainian delegation spoke at the plenary session of the UN Forum of Indigenous Issues. The delegation informed the Forum on position of the adopted May 11 resolution by the Ukrainian Verkhonva Rada, “The appeal of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the United Nations, the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, world leaders and all members of the international community to honor genocide victims Crimean Tatars and the Russian Federation condemnation of violations of rights and freedoms of the Crimean Tatar people.”
Additionally, the Ukrainian delegation drew the session’s participants’ attention to the latest facts on the growing repressive pressures of the Russian occupational government onto the indigenous people of Crimea, the Crimean tartars. One obvious manifestation of this was the recognition of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis extremist organization and a ban on its activities in the peninsula; another was the detainment of Deputy Chairman of the Mejis Ilmi Umerov on May 12th.
