President of Ukraine had a meeting with Secretary-General of the United Nations

During a working visit to Washington, President Petro Poroshenko had a meeting with Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon.

According to the President, the Nuclear Security Summit is taking place against the backdrop of unprecedented violations that ruin the international security system and jeopardize the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Russian aggression against Ukraine and threat of deploying nuclear weapons in the Ukrainian Crimea contradict the Budapest Memorandum and violate the main principles of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

“Ukraine gave up the third biggest nuclear arsenal in the world but did not receive protection from the aggression of Russia,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The parties discussed broader involvement of UN instruments and institutions for the termination of the Russian aggression. In particular, the discussion was related to the deployment of the international security mission in Donbas.

The President urged to appoint UN Rapporteur to investigate the facts of torture of Ukrainians forcibly held in Russia.

The Head of State supported the UN Humanitarian Response Plan 2016 for Ukraine, which provides for the assistance to Ukrainian citizens most affected by the Russian aggression.

The parties paid special attention to the protection of human rights in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, as well as the protection of all Ukrainians illegally retained in Russia, including Nadiya Savchenko.

“Savchenko must be released. It is a part of the Minsk agreements,” Ban Ki-moon noted adding that the Minsk agreements must be implemented in full.

In this context, the parties underlined the need for intensification of efforts of the international community with a view to ensure immediate and unconditional liberation of all Ukrainian political prisoners and search for missing persons.

The UN Secretary-General praised active role of Ukraine as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The President invited the UN leaders to participate in the events on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
